Track Name: The Ballad of 3 Dublin Pubs
On a cold South George's St in Dublin town
Two old friends they chance to meet
And trouble soon abounds
One was a drunkard
The other a down and out

They start in The Long Hall
With four rounds of whisky and stout
Soon they were singing of an old ballad
In cracked voices so loud
Until the barman said the pair of you crooners can get out

Onto the Castle of Broken Art
Where a girl once broke their hearts
So they drank deep and cursed her name
When suddenly along she came
So haggard and ugly with her flirting she drove them both out

On every street there's a place
Where your youth and your hope is laid waste

Onto the lounge of The Lord Edward
Where they remembered they'd argued
Over who loved that girl first
It was why they'd long parted
As the anger rose up they started their lungs to shout

But when the Guards came they both ran off
To the quays are heroes stumbled
Into the liffey one then dived in
Said 'On my life I had first loved her!'
The other dived to save him and the pair of fools soon were drowned

On every street there's a place
Where your youth and your hope is laid waste

Here ends The Ballad of Three Dublin Pubs
And the life of a drunkard and of a down and out
Track Name: Lonestar
Have you found what you wanted
In that wild far off place
Have you found what you wanted
And made good your escape

All the lights that are distant
Are they bright where you are?
In the lights that are distant
Have you found your own star?
Your lonestar?
Your lonestar?

This town it feels empty
Now that you're not around
In this town once of plenty
There's no joy to be found

All the sights that I yearn for
they are thrown to the past
All the loves that I burn for
All but one never last
Your lonestar
Your lonestar

Even now ever watchful
Afraid you'll return
Deprived of the lustre
By our gray weary sun

If you stay in the distance
You'll always be bright
In the lights that are distant
My one star in the night
My lonestar
My lonestar
Track Name: Mary in Pale Blue
Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
cheap angel lights divine me to
Your window on South Circular road
where love once young has now grown old
A homeless man there stares at me
His eyes are dead they do not see
And silently he stands and seems
To tell me to forget my dreams

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
All in vain I called out to you

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
on Leeson street I prayed to you
When they were baying for my blood
When I was sure I was no good
You never came your gently smile
As I was crying stayed all the while
And curled then cruelly in my mind
And to your beauty drove me blind

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
All in vain I called out to you

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
There's sins I could confess if I did not lose
All that fearful faith of my youth
Mary in your dress pale blue

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
you stand in stone of stolen youth
And strange impossible ideals
An innocence that was not real
Before you now I will never bow
For don't you know I've grown too proud

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
All in vain I called out to you

Mary in your dress pale blue
I am cold and lifeless too
When all around me are in pain
My expression stays the same
And both our marble hearts don't bleed
And both our marble eyes don't grieve
We smile and curl our lips and go
To hell with all their plaintive souls

Oh Mary in your dress pale blue
All in vain I called out to you
Mary in Pale blue
Track Name: Not The Type
Could you stand if that someone
to hold you when you are low
Enfold you within their arms at night
Were to me though I will freely
Admit I'm not the type?
To be so jealous to be so caring
To be gracious to want to possess
To dress you in finery or jewels
All I know is I would try if I could to be true

And I won't lie
I'm not the loving type
Oh I won't lie
I'm not the loving type

But as we go through life
These battlements arise
And we lock so much inside
Our fears our hopes our pride
And if you need the type
Who loves with ease well I
I'm not the loving type
I'm not the loving type

So if you're listening
Though I won't name you or blame you
Should you run a mile
And I'm sorry my words are so very plain
But if you're willing to forgive them
Then I would love you just the same

And I won't lie
I'm not the loving type
Track Name: 3 Day Week
The construction crew are downing tools
And crying to the labour courts
And there a choir of pompous fools
Whose favours readily can be bought
rejoice in one loud empty voice
'Insolvency is here again!'
And speak of workers rights and justice
With their voices full of pretense
As outside on the broken streets
The world now turns to a three day week

Oh the world now turns to a three day week
To a three day week

She drives to the cliff face
And she stares down at the choppy waters below
She's behind on the cars and cards and rent
And she's got nothing left to be sold
She drives out here to find some peace
From all those letters piling in
And dreams then of the sweet release
That the sea to all her worries could bring
She bough with the madness at its peak
And now she's on a three day week

Oh the world now turns to a three day week
To a three day week

Your years of toil don't add up to much
One cheque the door and it's good luck
For the banks are saved and your pension's purged
And your hands are old and worn and rough
When you buy in bulk and you buy from the East
You can't even stretch to a three day week

It's God money and gold
It's a three day week
Woe and sorrow untold
It's a three day week

Oh the world now turns to a three day week
To a three day week
Track Name: In Drunken Company
If I don't remember how this song it goes
It's because the night was heavy
Or the years they took their toll
And if my thoughts go drifting
Out beyond these beer stained walls
I hope you can forgive me
Should my words suddenly stall
And betray my longing to be far away and free
Of the bars and crowds and catcalls
Of this grim old sinful country
For though you are my brethryn
And we are of the same breed
I've lost so much of time and trust
In drunken company

If I ever do escape
Some other he will soon replace me
For one thing that this scene can make
Is dreamers who have dreams all wasted
In drunken company

Though tongues they may be bitter
And minds begrudge
This is the only place I have ever really loved
Where melodies surround you
As you walk around the town
In the chatter of old women
Sad poetry is found
So many a martyr died before his time
And I don't mean the flag-wavers
But those of my own kind
And oh they were my brethryn
And we share the same creed
All the love and light it died
In drunken company

For though you are my brethryn
And we share the same disease
Most nights you can find me
In drunken company
I hope you can forgive me
Should my words suddenly stall
If my thoughts they should go drifting
Beyond these beer stained walls
Track Name: Who We Are
You want me to be something I am not
You're so used to through and through all my talk
How am I to answer this charge?
I can only answer we are
We are who we are

I never said I was anything more
I once made you laugh and now I'm a bore
We are who we are

Imperfect words halting each mind a maze
So fragile exquisite no light the same
We must always ask for the stars
We must always fall short we are
We are who we are

Love's mirror is warped right from the start
Though throughout our lives we may play many parts
We are who we are
Track Name: Into the Gutter
It started in the morning with a needle
And it ended with another little cut
Two wounds one of them is bleeding
Into the gutter

Well nobody saw how it happenned
They thought he was just another drunk
So they stepped over him as his life receded
Into the gutter

As he lay dying he said, 'Dear Lord forgive me
For all the harm that I have done
For my life of stupor and stealing
For this demon I am become'

But you live and you die by the needle
And he stole from the wrong man this time
There goes another young dreamer
Into the gutter

he was brought up to know no better
Than beatings and dreams of escape
A life made up of bruises and metal
And a seed that soothes all who ache
He thought of his daughter so sickly
And her frail mother a girl yet herself
And of how everything he touched became tainted
By the vials that he'd come to sell

But you live and you die by the needle
Though he stole from the wrong man this time
There goes another young dreamer
Into the gutter

A crowd now had gathered around him
Full of shoppers on their merry way home
But his eyes were not blind and unseeing
His pale body was now lying prone

Gone is a child that had clung to
A mother with a vacant lost smile
Gone is a father who wanted
More than he had for his child
Into the gutter

It started in the morning with a needle
And it ended with another little cut
Two wounds one of them is bleeding
Into the gutter
Track Name: Name Your Poison
9 a.m and it's an early house
Where there's no pain that can't be doused
With a little bitter taste
And with forgetfulness it's laced
There lie ruins whose fortunes wained
though no one hears they still explain
But at least they know their poison's name

Red is on the herbal pills
She takes them when her love life's ills
Don't match the catchcry of her mind
That faithful lover she must find
So she's lying in a kind of bliss
And what's it matter the things she'll miss
For at least she knows her poison's name

The fellowship of the thin
Their daily fabled quest begin
In search of beauty's broken spell
The plumb the depths of darkest hell
And dwell between awake and dreams
And each play out the same death scene
But at least they know their poison's name

i have watched them from afar
On crowded streets and empty bars
I sit and write away like this
And feel apart and sometimes wish
I knew what ate away at me
That I might have a little peace
For at least I'd know my poison's name
Track Name: Watercolour
As though we both were in a dream
Floating gently on serene
Waters boarded by tall trees
To shield the sun a cooling breeze
Caressed the leaves
All was summer all was green
We could talk but needn't speak
We had no more need of time
We had no more need of lies
No more denials
You wore that bright dress and your pale
Skin was fresh with youth we sailed
Towards the future with no fear
And never thought to even steer
The way seemed clear
There came rain to wash away
All our watercolour day
Left the scene now looking gray
Stole the summer from your face
And no more trace of our watercolour dream

Maybe I was alone to blame
Maybe I took too much you gave
So freely of yourself as I
That something else came to desire
How soon I tire
As I grow old and try to paint
The scene again something has changed
The colours run my hand it shakes
The world outside it calls to break
Me from my watercolour dream
Track Name: A King of Dublin 8
If you would just whisper a few words of faith
I might make it through this
Daylight it glitters on golden rooftiles
As all who pass they smile
On their way to futures they fear not
And seem so happy with their lot
But I could be wrong though they seem to move on
While I'm standing on one spot

In the air there's burnt barley
In doorways there's drunks
The kings of Dublin 8
Sating their sorrows on time they have borrowed
As death nearby awaits
Patiently eyeing one more crown
Each day they bestow it anew
Upon one more fallen and I hear them calling
This is where you really belong

Holy holy hosannah
Blood is wine and God is grain
Holy holy hosannah
Amongst the kings of Dublin 8

There are no poets to speak of these days
I have heard them rave
Yelling out couplets
The crude public praise
As I look away
But I may be tired or bitter
And don't deign to listen too close
As homewards I go from the same nightly show
One more pauper with his poems

Well I would love you if I had more time
But I must take my place
there where I'm welcome
Where failure's a crown
My kingdom awaits

Holy holy hosannah
Bloody is wine and God is grain
Holy holy hosannah
And I'm a king
Oh I'm a king of Dublin 8
Track Name: All the Drunks
Tuesday night and the bar is full
Of lonely souls out on the pull
I bore one girl with idle chat
And another says it's good looks I lack
And I don't know what the hell I'm doing
Or who or what I am pursuing
Lord I'm tired of all the drunks

Slurring words and slinging shots
On unsteady feet as their liver's rot
The city's broke and the church is dead
There's a pale blue book no one has read
And I don't know where I'm going
But there's music and the beer is flowing
Though Lord I'm tired of all the drunks

Lord I'm tired of all the drunks
Like a plague of hazy eyed dullards
That grin and grope at you and leer
But in this town there's always one so near

Lord I'm tired
Lord I'm tired
Lord I'm tired of all the drunks

They jostle as they yell for rounds
The song I play is soon drowned out
But I claim I care not for the cheers
Of empty minds and drunken ears
And anyway I was just dreaming
When I thought I could get across my meaning
Lord I'm tired of all the drunks

I find a girl and we're in sync
And she's fond of me and she's fond of drink
but love on these cold nights soon dies
to lonelyness I rest resigned
Lord I'm tired
Lord I'm tired
Lord I'm tired of being a drunk
Track Name: All Said and Done
I saw you touch your hair
Does it mean that you care?
And then you touched your lips
And I sensed something amiss
The words all fell away
Where they went I could not say
And I sensed a sudden danger
All at once you were a stranger

And it was all said and done
Someone lost and someone won
All said and done
Something lost and something won

I saw a shadow of you
In the garden of my youth
I felt that first embrace
Knew the bitter aftertaste
I stared around the room
Couples sat in silent gloom
Their eyes cried out the truth
Love no longer any use
For it was all said and done
Someone lost and someone won
All said and done
Something lost and something won

I watched the light recede
Ploughed again my fallow field
And now that words were spent
I wondered were they ever meant
For those I heard from you
Were the sweetest lies I ever knew
And from no other lips
Will broken oaths your own eclipse
All said and done
Someone lost and someone won
All said and done
Something lost and something won
